In a notable shift within the aviation sector, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest airport, based on passenger traffic in July. Istanbul Airport managed to accommodate 8.15 million travelers, surpassing Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This marks a significant change in rankings, as Heathrow experienced a 1.5% decrease in passenger numbers from the previous July, whereas Istanbul enjoyed a 2.3% increase.
The dip in Heathrow’s figures is partly attributed to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. This development has reignited calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s proposed expansion, which includes a third runway. The airport currently operates at near full capacity with its two existing runways. The proposed £33 billion expansion aims to boost Heathrow’s annual passenger capacity to approximately 150 million, which the airport argues is crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a larger site and round-the-clock operations. It is currently equipped with three runways, and a fourth is slated to become operational by the end of 2026. This infrastructure allows it to handle a higher volume of passengers, contributing to its recent ascendancy over Heathrow.
Meanwhile, other UK airports are experiencing significant growth. London Stansted and Manchester airports both reported their busiest July on record, with passenger numbers hitting 3.1 million and 3.4 million, respectively. These figures underscore a broader trend of rising air travel demand across the region.
