A Dutch foundation has unveiled ambitious plans to construct Ukraine’s largest underground hospital, strategically positioned near the front lines to offer emergency medical care while safeguarding patients and medical personnel from drone and artillery threats. This cutting-edge facility will span approximately 600 square meters and be buried 8 meters underground, featuring reinforced concrete to endure severe attacks. Designed primarily as a stabilization center, it will host six operating rooms dedicated to urgent trauma care, such as surgeries for shrapnel wounds and essential blood transfusions, before transferring patients to hospitals located further from the conflict zone.
Emphasizing the need for secrecy due to security concerns, the precise location of this underground hospital remains undisclosed. Construction efforts are already in motion, with expectations set for the facility to become operational by February 2027. The initiative is a direct response to a request from Ukraine’s Military Medical Service and enjoys collaboration with a Norwegian healthcare foundation. The projected cost for the underground structure alone is positioned at €2 million, while an additional €500,000 will be necessary for procuring medical equipment, supplies, and armored evacuation vehicles.
Overall, the total investment for the project is anticipated to reach €2.5 million. As of now, the foundation has successfully raised around €750,000 and actively seeks to secure the remaining €1.75 million to bring this crucial initiative to fruition. The project underscores the escalating necessity of protected medical facilities in the vicinity of combat zones, particularly as the use of drones on the battlefield renders conventional evacuation methods increasingly perilous.
