Norway has expressed strong disapproval of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to implement a 12.5% tariff on the majority of Norwegian imports, labeling the action as both unfair and unjustified. The new tariff, which was enacted immediately, predominantly targets Norwegian products such as seafood, furniture, and industrial goods.
Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide has contested the United States’ assertions that Norway has failed to prevent imports associated with forced labor. He emphasized that Norwegian law strictly bans goods produced through forced or child labor and revealed that the Norwegian government has formally communicated its objections to U.S. officials.
Additionally, Norway raised concerns over why it faces a higher tariff rate compared to the European Union and the United Kingdom, which are subjected to a 10% tariff. Despite the imposition of these tariffs, the Norwegian government has decided against retaliatory measures, such as counter-tariffs, arguing that such actions would only lead to increased costs for Norwegian consumers.
While the U.S. accounts for only a small portion of Norway’s exports, officials and analysts have cautioned that the tariffs could have a detrimental impact on Norwegian seafood exports and might undermine the core principles of free trade.
