Christopher Nolan has addressed the discussions surrounding his choice to employ contemporary English dialogue in his new film adaptation of The Odyssey. Nolan explained that this creative decision was aimed at enhancing the emotional accessibility of the story for today’s audiences, despite the narrative’s ancient Greek setting.
The release of the film’s trailer ignited conversations due to the characters’ use of modern phrases, which some found jarring given the historical context. In response, Nolan emphasized that his priority was to convey emotional depth through language that resonates with viewers, noting that this choice was a “no-brainer” for him, although he recognized that it might stir controversy.
Based on the classic tale, the film chronicles Odysseus’ prolonged journey back home following the Trojan War. The cast features Matt Damon in the role of Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, and Robert Pattinson playing Antinous.
This epic adventure marks Nolan’s most ambitious project to date, boasting a star-studded ensemble that includes Zendaya, Charlize Theron, and Lupita Nyong’o. The movie is set to premiere in Indian cinemas on July 16, before its broader international release.
