Advanced Tech Drives Norway-Netherlands Pipeline Progress Post-Feasibility Study

The progression towards a new direct gas pipeline connecting Norway and the Netherlands has taken a significant step forward with the successful completion of a feasibility study. This development paves the way for North Sea pipeline operator Nogat to focus on refining the project’s critical aspects, such as its transport capacity. The anticipated pipeline is set to offer an additional route for Norwegian gas, thereby bolstering the security of supply in case current pipeline connections face disruptions.

Planned to commence operations in 2029, the new pipeline aims to have a capacity exceeding 4 billion cubic meters of gas annually. This volume is expected to meet about 15% of the Netherlands’ total gas demand. As domestic energy production declines and Europe seeks to minimize reliance on suppliers from geopolitically unstable regions, the importance of this infrastructure becomes increasingly evident.

Nogat emphasized that their existing gas system can be seamlessly linked to the Norwegian offshore pipeline, enhancing the project’s feasibility. Falco van Wissen, Nogat’s Director, pointed out that Norwegian gas already constitutes roughly one-third of Europe’s gas imports and noted that it is less polluting compared to LNG imports.

The decision regarding the remaining investments necessary for the project is anticipated by the middle of next year, as the parties involved continue to evaluate the project’s financial requirements. This pipeline represents a strategic move in ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply for the Netherlands and potentially other parts of Europe.
