While stress is often linked to burnout and anxiety, health experts highlight that not all stress is detrimental. A certain level of short-term stress, known as positive stress or eustress, can actually enhance concentration, drive motivation, and improve performance during crucial challenges. This type of stress is typically experienced before significant events such as job interviews, public speaking engagements, exams, or while acquiring new skills. Though it might trigger temporary physical responses like a racing heart or sweaty palms, this stress fosters focus and problem-solving, often boosting confidence once the hurdle is overcome, according to certified happiness coach Farheen Belgaumwala.

The real concern arises when stress becomes a constant presence, leaving little room for recovery. Persistent stress stemming from demanding workloads, uncertainty, unrealistic expectations, poor communication, or insufficient emotional support can gradually impact both mental and physical health. If not adequately managed, chronic stress can diminish productivity, impair emotional well-being, and heighten the risk of burnout. Experts caution that the body often exhibits early warning signs of excessive stress before individuals even realize it, including persistent fatigue, sleep disturbances, frequent headaches, irritability, trouble concentrating, emotional exhaustion, and a constant sense of tension.

Maintaining a healthy balance between helpful and harmful stress does not necessarily require drastic changes. Simple strategies like taking short breaks throughout the day, spending time in nature, practicing deep breathing exercises, setting realistic boundaries, ensuring sufficient sleep, and seeking support from trusted friends, family, or mental health professionals can effectively manage stress levels. Recognizing the distinction between beneficial and detrimental stress empowers individuals to remain productive while safeguarding their long-term well-being.
