This summer, Europe has experienced a significant rise in excess mortality due to a series of intense heatwaves, with at least 35,000 excess deaths recorded. The impact of the heatwaves is expected to be even higher as additional countries finalize their assessments. Germany, France, and Spain have reported a combined total of over 25,000 estimated excess deaths, underscoring the severe impact of the extreme temperatures.
Germany has been particularly hard hit, with approximately 14,000 heat-related deaths reported between April and early August, marking this period as the deadliest summer for heat since records began. In Spain, nearly 5,000 heat-attributed deaths have been recorded since May, setting a new record for the country. France has reported about 7,300 excess deaths from late May to July, although these numbers are preliminary and do not yet include data from August.
Other European nations, including the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland, have also observed notable increases in mortality rates during the heatwaves. As temperatures soared above 40°C across extensive regions of western and central Europe, numerous national and local temperature records were shattered. Scientists have linked the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme heat events to climate change.
Identifying heat-related deaths can be challenging, as extreme temperatures may exacerbate existing cardiovascular, respiratory, and other health conditions, rather than being recorded as the direct cause of death. Experts anticipate a rise in the overall European death toll as more comprehensive mortality data from August is compiled and analyzed. The substantial number of deaths highlights the escalating public health risks associated with increasingly severe heatwaves.
