The Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten and his D66 party have reportedly utilized artificial intelligence to craft hundreds of social media posts, including those on sensitive political topics. This approach has sparked concerns about the authenticity of these messages and the potential impact on public trust. An analysis of 1,812 posts from Jetten’s and D66’s profiles on platforms like X, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn, dating back to 2021, revealed that at least 232 of these posts were created using AI chatbots. This included 68 posts from Jetten’s personal accounts and 164 from the party’s accounts.
The increase in AI-generated content became particularly noticeable after the collapse of the Schoof I Cabinet in June 2025. From this point onwards, approximately 30% of the posts from Jetten and the D66 party were identified as AI-generated. This technology wasn’t only limited to social media posts; it was also employed in parts of Jetten’s book “Hoe het wél kan” and in lines within three of D66’s campaign videos. The fact that some of these AI-assisted posts addressed delicate issues, such as the war in Ukraine, the MH17 disaster commemoration, and the government’s apology to the Moluccan community, has drawn significant attention.
While D66 has confirmed the use of AI, they assert that all content undergoes review and refinement by their staff. They also emphasize that posts on Jetten’s personal accounts are based on his own input and receive his approval or editing. However, experts have raised concerns about the potential implications of presenting AI-generated material as personal communication. Claes de Vreese, a professor at the University of Amsterdam, highlighted the risk that AI-generated language might blur the lines between a politician’s genuine views and messages crafted by technology, thus affecting credibility.
This situation brings to light broader questions regarding transparency and the application of AI in political communication. It poses a significant challenge, especially when official social media accounts are expected to convey the personal views and authentic words of elected leaders. As AI continues to play a growing role in political messaging, the importance of maintaining trust and clarity in communication becomes increasingly crucial.
