In light of ongoing tensions with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Americans to embrace slightly elevated gasoline prices, attributing the increase to disruptions in shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz. Addressing a rally in New York, Trump emphasized that the minor uptick in fuel costs is a necessary sacrifice to thwart Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He also hinted at potentially declaring the Strait of Hormuz as “a territory of the United States” should the U.S. triumph over Iran.
Iran, however, has dismissed Trump’s assertions, maintaining that the waterway remains under its jurisdiction. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi stated that Iran will continue its blockade until the U.S. acknowledges what he termed as its defeat. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that Tehran has yet to decide on resuming negotiations with the United States, adding that shipping through the strait will only recommence if Washington accedes to Iran’s conditions.
The ongoing standoff has significantly impacted tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial conduit for global oil and natural gas exports. This disruption has led to a rise in crude oil prices, further straining fuel costs. Currently, the average price of gasoline in the U.S. has climbed to approximately $4.08 per gallon, marking a 29% increase from the previous year. Brent crude prices are also experiencing a notable weekly surge.
In Iran, the economic repercussions are similarly profound. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has attributed the nation’s escalating inflation to the U.S. blockade, as well as sanctions and limitations on Iranian oil exports. The Trump administration, for its part, has threatened to impose additional financial measures against Tehran, as diplomatic efforts to broker a ceasefire remain at an impasse.
